Pictures of The Shire Hall

a Historic Building in the town of Bodmin, in the county of Cornwall

About The Shire Hall

This beautifully preserved building is one of Cornwall's gems from the 19th-century. The Shire Hall was built in 1838 and shows an imposing granite frontage typical of the period. The interior has many graceful, historic features and of these the most impressive is the cantilevered staircase.

The building, dominating a large square, was used as the county court until 1988, since this time with the aid of grants from the Lottery and European Funds, Bodmin Town Council have been able to restore the building to its original state. It now acts as a museum offering visitors the unique experience of attending court room drama's from the 19th-century!

A visit to the Shire Hall is well worth while, apart from being able to enjoy being a member of the jury for a courtroom trial, visitors can learn much about the history of Bodmin, its mining traditions and of its connections with smuggling. The rich wildlife of the region can be explored giving visitors an idea of the best parts of the area to discover a wealth of Cornish flora and fauna for yourself.

The Shire Hall offers a range of services to help visitors enjoy the historic nature and beauty of Bodmin, it also has a shop with books and guides.
